My first time being discriminated against, I was in a new school in a new town. I was in elementary, in Orlando Florida, we had just moved from California and I was confused with why people would look at me differently. Being picked on and asked "why do you look like that" or "you talk funny" would make me feel singled out and different form everyone else. It wasn't until I moved to Miami Florida that I felt comfortable and at home again. Being with other Hispanics that were just like me, made me be comfortable again with who I am. Until I went off to college. Coming to Florida State University, I felt like that little boy back in elementary again, in a new school and city, and feeling out of place.
Finding where I fit in was tough until I found a flyer for an HLSU (Hispanic/Latino Student Union) event. This event brought me together with people that were all from different ethnicities and backgrounds, but we all shared the same stories. I chose HLSU as my community to research my question, How can HLSU involve Hispanic/Latino students here at FSU? I believe that I interviewed Odalys Guzman from the executive board of HLSU because I wanted someone that had a position of importance in that organization.
