Preparatory Assignment #1

The community that I am looking towards is an organization called HLSU (Hispanic Latino Student Union) here at FSU. My research question is "What are the ways that HLSU involves Hispanic/Latinx students at FSU?".

I chose this research question because of the fact that FSU is a predominately white university and people of color being represented is becoming a bigger and more known thing, but by how much? There are people afraid of saying where they are from because of being afraid of what other people will think of them based off of stereotypes. There aren't that many Hispanics in FSU, and for many Hispanics, its a culture shock just being here. An organization like HLSU provides a group of people just like them, where they can be more comfortable and speak their language and eat the same traditional foods with as well, feeling at home. HLSU helps people feel comfortable at a foreign place, but it can do more than that, and it does. Some questions to ask are whether or not if people other than Hispanics can benefit from this organization and by how much? Can it educate others to break stereotypes that are already set? I plan on making my research essay based around questions like these as well as incorporating research and information from members of the executive board of HLSU itself. I am going to be using the FSU databases to make sure I use scholarly articles and I plan on interviewing a member of the executive board from HLSU.

What's missing in my research is how can organizations make a change and how much of an impact it makes on the people.
